How to apply

Our differences are valuable, come share your perspective as a woman in physics!

Applications are now closed.

We can't wait to support you at CUWiP. But first, there are a few items you must do. You MUST APPLY through the central APS CUWiP application site. Just click the button at the bottom of this page.

After you apply, you will hear back by Nov. 9th about which site you are accepted to, and then you can register any time before Nov. 20th, when you have determined your travel logistics.

UCLA is one of ten CUWiP 2017 sites around the country. Please apply to the CUWiP site that corresponds with where you will physically be in January 2017. UCLA is the CUWiP site for students from CA, AZ, AK and HI. If you have additional questions, please refer to the FAQ page.

Application/Registration Timeline:

  • Sept 1: APS website open for applications
  • Oct 14 before 8:59pm PDT: Application deadline
  • Nov 9: Applicants informed of acceptance
  • Nov 20: Deadline for accepted students to confirm attendance by registering

Are you interested in presenting a poster on any research you have been part of? Presenting a poster is not a requirement for attending the conference, but we do encourage all students who have been involved in research to present their work during the poster session. You do not need to commit to presenting in the poster fair until Nov. 9th, but if you are interested, it helps to start planning now.

Start your application NOW and compose a thoughtful Applicant Statement. Why would you like to attend CUWiP? What will CUWiP contribute to your personal and professional growth?

In the event that the conference is oversubscribed, priority will be given to applicants who are:

  • undergraduate physics majors
  • freshman college students intending to declare a physics major
  • community college students planning to transfer to a physics program in a UC or state school
  • new to conferences, and specifically APS CUWiP
  • applying to a conference site nearby their expected location January 13-15, 2017
  • going to be in CA, AZ, AK, or HI when they travel to APS CUWiP 2017 at UCLA
Interdisciplinary students are also encouraged to apply, especially if interested in the fields of astrophysics, biophysics, earth/planetary/space sciences, geophysics, atmospheric/oceanic sciences, physical chemistry, and engineering. We anticipate that CUWiP@UCLA will be oversubscribed. Therefore, it is very important to complete all parts of the application and to write a thoughtful Applicant Statement that conveys how this conference is meaningful for your personal and professional growth.

There is no cost to apply, but please note there will be a $45 registration fee when you register for your confirmed specific site in November.
